Frequently Asked Questions about Permaculture
What is permaculture and how does it apply to my space?
Permaculture is a design system that observes Nature to create productive, resilient and regenerative spaces. The term emerged from “permanent agriculture” and evolved into “permanent culture”, reflecting the idea of building lasting relationships between people, territories and the environment.
In practice, it can be applied at any scale: from a pot on a windowsill or a balcony, to an edible garden, a rural farm, a product design project or a community initiative. What changes isn’t the principle, but how each project is thought through and organised.
At Oficina Celeiro, we apply permaculture principles through a personalised reading of the territory or project, creating a regenerative action plan adapted to each client’s reality, goals and context.
Is permaculture only about planting?
No.
While food production is one of its best-known applications, permaculture is, above all, a design system.
It brings together contemporary and traditional knowledge to create regenerative solutions in different contexts.
Depending on the project, it can integrate natural building, agroforestry, syntropic farming, water management, solidarity economy, product design, environmental education, community development and even the process of building brands or businesses with a positive socio-environmental impact.
More than a farming technique, permaculture is a way of thinking and designing systems capable of generating environmental, social, cultural and economic benefits in an integrated way.
What’s the difference between permaculture, gardening and landscaping?
Gardening focuses on cultivating, caring for and maintaining plants and green areas.
Landscaping designs and organises outdoor and indoor spaces, integrating vegetation, architecture and natural elements to create functional, visually balanced environments.
Permaculture broadens this view. Instead of looking at elements in isolation, it observes the space as a living, interconnected system.
On a piece of land, it considers factors such as water, wind, soil, sunlight, biodiversity, movement of people and frequency of use, organising everything through zones and functional relationships.
In design, product or consulting projects, it seeks to align environmental, social and cultural impact.
More than designing spaces, permaculture redesigns the relationship between people and the place where they live.
Does permaculture work in small, urban spaces?
Yes. This is one of the biggest misconceptions about permaculture.
While many people associate it only with large rural properties, its principles can be applied at any scale.
A terrace of just a few square metres can integrate food production, medicinal plants, composting, rainwater harvesting and strategies to improve thermal comfort.
Even in an apartment it’s possible to create small productive systems and strengthen community relationships through sharing seeds, food or knowledge.
The scale changes. The principles stay the same.
What are permaculture zones and how do they apply?
Zones organise the space according to frequency of use and the level of care required.
Zone 0 – the home, where we observe our habits and consumption.
Zone 1 – spaces visited daily: garage, vegetable gardens, herbs and medicinal plants.
Zone 2 – areas of frequent use, such as orchards, composting, leisure area and small animals.
Zone 3 – larger-scale production, with low maintenance needs.
Zone 4 – semi-wild area, used occasionally for harvesting or management.
Zone 5 – area dedicated exclusively to observing and conserving nature.
Even on a small terrace or garden, this concept can be adapted, creating different levels of use and care.
Frequently Asked Questions about Consulting
What is a territory consultancy and how does it work?
A territory consultancy is an in-depth reading of the space to understand its potential and develop a regenerative action plan.
It can be applied to gardens, farms, plots of land, cultural spaces, schools or community projects.
During the analysis we look at factors such as sunlight, wind, water, terrain, soil, existing vegetation, access and how people use the space.
From this reading we develop a diagnosis and propose solutions such as zoning, water management, pathways, productive gardens, medicinal areas, fire prevention strategies and a phased implementation plan.
Oficina Celeiro’s consultancies can be carried out in person in Portugal and Brazil, or online for any location.

Can permaculture consultancy be done online?
Yes.
Online consultancy is an efficient alternative for clients who are far away or who want to start the project before an in-person visit.
The process includes analysis via satellite images and photographs, online meetings, digital mapping, zoning and a personalised report with practical recommendations.
Available for clients in any country.
How much does a permaculture consultancy cost?
The investment depends on the size of the space, the complexity of the project and the location.
The consultancy typically includes:
– on-site or online analysis;
– territorial reading;
– resource mapping and zoning;
– personalised report;
– meeting to present the proposals.
The best way forward is to get in touch for an initial, no-obligation conversation.

How do I choose land for permaculture?
Choosing land involves much more than looking at price or location.
The main factors are:
– water availability and behaviour;
– solar orientation and shaded areas;
– soil quality and potential;
– prevailing winds and microclimates;
– access, neighbours and community;
– the land’s history of use.
Degraded soil isn’t always a problem. Often it’s exactly the starting point for a regeneration process.
Oficina Celeiro also carries out territorial reading consultancies before land purchase.

Can I hire just a single consultancy?
Yes.
Not every project needs to start with a full plan.
Often a single consultancy is enough to answer questions, set priorities and point out the next steps.

Who is Flávio Lazarino and what is Oficina Celeiro?
Flávio Lazarino is a designer, permaculturist, environmental educator and activist, with over 20 years of experience in design, art, culture and socio-environmental regeneration projects in Brazil and Portugal.
Throughout his career he has collaborated with institutions such as UNESCO, IPHAN, IBAMA, SEBRAE and Museu do Índio, held exhibitions in spaces such as MAM, Museu da República and Parque Lage, and created the Homem-Árvore brand, made with organic cotton from an agroforestry cooperative in Paraíba.
He holds a Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC), Environmental Education certification from IBAMA and ISO 14000 from UFRJ.
Oficina Celeiro was created to integrate permaculture, design and human and environmental relationships, developing projects that regenerate territories, strengthen communities and produce abundance at any scale.
What is regenerative design?
Regenerative design goes beyond sustainability.
While sustainability seeks to reduce negative impacts, regenerative design seeks to create systems capable of improving the environment they’re part of.
This can mean regenerating soil while producing food, strengthening local economies through a product, restoring ecosystems, or creating spaces that foster healthier human relationships.
At Oficina Celeiro we apply regenerative design both to physical territories and to brands, products and cultural projects.
How can permaculture be integrated into a cultural or institutional project?
Cultural projects also have a territory — both physical and symbolic.
In the physical territory, it’s possible to integrate edible gardens, nurseries, water systems, gathering areas and educational spaces.
In the symbolic territory, regenerative principles can guide visual identity, internal processes, communication and the relationship with artists, communities and local ecosystems.
Each project begins by understanding the institution’s specific context and needs.
Do you also carry out project execution?
Whenever possible.
Depending on the location and scale, I can oversee implementation, coordinate teams, or develop the project so it can be executed locally.
Do you only work in Portugal?
No.
Oficina Celeiro operates in Portugal, Brazil, and also offers online consultancies for other Portuguese-speaking countries and international clients.
Do you only take on permaculture projects?
No.
Many clients look for help reorganising a plot of land, improving a garden, developing a cultural space, installing water systems, or creating products and initiatives with lower environmental impact. Permaculture works as a methodology that integrates different areas of a project.
Can projects be developed remotely?
Yes.
Most of the process can be carried out online using photographs, videos, maps, satellite images, plans and video meetings.
When needed, in-person visits can also be arranged.

How long does a project take?
It depends on the complexity.
A consultancy can be completed within a few days.
Full projects vary depending on the area, goals and level of detail.
Each proposal comes with its own specific timeline.
Do I need to know about permaculture to hire you?
No.
Most clients have never studied permaculture.
Oficina Celeiro’s role is precisely to translate these principles into practical, understandable solutions suited to your context.
How does a permaculture experience work?
Experiences are hands-on learning activities in permaculture and regenerative design.
They can be organised for families, groups, schools, companies, institutions or communities.
Each experience is designed around the group’s goals, and can take the form of a workshop, course, talk or practical activity.
They’re held in person in Portugal and Brazil, with online versions also available.
